Halloween: The Game released on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store, four days after Digital Deluxe buyers got in on Friday, September 4, 2026 at 9 AM PT — IllFonic’s own wording, matched by a 16:00 UTC timestamp on two separate console storefronts. Both dates held. Nothing slipped.
What is still ahead is the physical release on October 6. And the game uses the phrase “Advance Access” to mean two entirely different things, with the official site using a third word for one of them. If you are still choosing an edition, that distinction matters more than the dates.
The dates that matter
| What | Date | Published clock time |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Deluxe head start | Friday, September 4, 2026 | 9 AM PT / 16:00 UTC |
| Full digital release (all editions) | Tuesday, September 8, 2026 | 16:00 UTC |
| Physical Standard & Collector’s | Tuesday, October 6, 2026 | None published |
Digital launch covered all four storefronts named on the official site. There is no Nintendo version and no Microsoft Store (Xbox on PC) listing.
Unlock time: 16:00 UTC, per two first-party storefronts
The PlayStation Store US listing gave the standard edition a release of 9/8/2026 at 04:00 PM UTC, and Xbox’s store data carried the same moment for the base-game SKU as 2026-09-08T16:00:00Z. Two first-party storefronts landing on an identical clock time was about as solid as pre-launch timing got, and both the September 4 and September 8 dates arrived exactly as listed.
The Deluxe head start was timestamped the same way: PS Store US listed 9/4/2026 at 04:00 PM UTC, Xbox’s data carried 2026-09-04T16:00:00Z, and the Xbox Deluxe listing spelled it out in prose — “Advance Access on September 4, 2026 at 9:00 AM Pacific Time.” That is 09:00 Pacific, matching the official site’s “9 AM PT” exactly.
Here is what that 16:00 UTC moment worked out to locally. These are arithmetic conversions of one published figure, not an announced regional unlock map:
| Region | Local time |
|---|---|
| US Pacific (PDT) | 9:00 AM, same day |
| US Eastern (EDT) | 12:00 PM, same day |
| UK (BST) | 5:00 PM, same day |
| Central Europe (CEST) | 6:00 PM, same day |
| Japan (JST) | 1:00 AM, next day |
| New Zealand (NZST) | 4:00 AM, next day |
Neither Steam nor Epic ever published a clock time. Whether the PC versions unlocked globally at 16:00 UTC alongside the consoles or rolled out regionally was never stated by IllFonic or either storefront — before launch or since. 16:00 UTC remains the console figure and nothing more.
One regional quirk from the pre-launch listings: the PlayStation Store UK concept page showed both editions at 8/9/2026 and never surfaced the separate September 4 Deluxe date at concept level. The US Deluxe product page was where that September 4 timestamp appeared.
The terminology trap: three things, one word
The playable half of this is settled now — the head start came and went between September 4 and September 8. The cosmetic half is still live, and it is what physical buyers are choosing between in October.
| Phrase | Where it appears | What it actually is |
|---|---|---|
| “Early Access” | Official site (halloweengame.com) | The four-day playable head start, Digital Deluxe only |
| “Advance Access” | Steam and Xbox store listings | The same four-day head start, different label |
| “(Advance Access)” | Physical Standard & Collector’s contents | An early cosmetic unlock — no playable head start at all |
The first two were the same thing wearing different names. Steam’s pre-purchase offer text read “Pre-Purchase this edition and play the game starting 4 days ahead of full release,” and the US store page labelled the window “Advance Access / Starts Sep 4.” The official site called that identical window “Early Access.” Nothing separated them but vocabulary.
The third is the trap, and it is the one that still matters. On the physical editions, IllFonic appends “(Advance Access)” to individual cosmetic items — the Michael Myers Clown Skin, the Samhain Skin (Collector’s Edition only), the civilian cosmetics. In that context the label means those skins unlock early inside the game rather than being physical-exclusive. It says nothing about when you can play, and the playable head start is over regardless.
Physical: October 6, and PS5 / Xbox Series X only
The Physical Standard Edition ($39.99 MSRP) and Physical Collector’s Edition ($149.99 MSRP) both arrive October 6, 2026 — four weeks after the digital launch. Both are PS5 and Xbox Series X only; there is no physical PC release.
So a physical buyer waits a month longer than a standard digital buyer and 32 days longer than a Deluxe buyer, and the “(Advance Access)” cosmetics in the box are an unlock-timing perk, not compensation. Physical pre-orders opened July 7, 2026, though the official page says only that they are available “through select retailers” and names none.
Two things remain unstated: how long the physical “(Advance Access)” cosmetic window lasts, and whether physical editions include the Phantom Michael Myers pre-order skin. The physical page doesn’t list it, and the skin is described as a Digital Pre-Order Exclusive — but no sentence says so outright.
Steam’s date was not a discrepancy
If you saw “8 Sep, 2026” in one place and “Sep 8, 2026” in another: nothing had shifted. Steam’s appdetails API returned "8 Sep, 2026" with no locale parameters, while the US-locale store page rendered “Release Date: Sep 8, 2026.” Same date, different formatting.
Two genuinely wrong dates circulated beforehand. One outlet’s PAX East hands-on referred to an October 8, 2026 launch; aggregated coverage of the Australian classification story produced a September 9, 2026. Every first-party source said September 8 digital and October 6 physical, and September 8 is the day the game actually shipped.
The date never moved. The game was announced August 20, 2025 at the Future Games Show during Gamescom with a bare “2026” window, and dated one month later at PlayStation’s State of Play on September 24, 2025 alongside the first gameplay. No delay was ever announced, and none happened.
Preload and reviews: how those two actually went
No preload date, time or download size was ever published on any platform. It was missing at the end of August and no storefront filled it in before the game went live. PlayStation’s listings noted that pre-orders “feature auto-download capability on PS5 systems,” but that is standard platform behavior, not a dated preload announcement. There is no answer still coming on this one: there was never a published preload window.
No review embargo was ever announced — but the reviews arrived on September 3. Metacritic dates eight of its nine indexed reviews to September 3, 2026, a day before Advance Access even opened; Gamekult’s landed September 7 and Shacknews dates its own to the September 8 release day. In practice, readers had critic verdicts five days before the wide launch.
Those verdicts were mixed. As of September 9, 2026 Metacritic showed 72 from nine critics, labelled “Mixed or Average,” while secondary reporting on OpenCritic put the share of critics recommending the game at roughly 22–25% — a decent average score attached to a low recommend rate, which is an unusual combination and worth reading a full review for rather than a number.
Because the Deluxe unlocked four days early, player impressions and clips were public from September 4 regardless of any embargo. IllFonic used that window: an Early Access Hotfix on September 5 covered crash fixes, challenges that were not tracking, a downed-as-Michael prompt bug and an Xbox Series S rendering issue in Performance Mode, and the studio pre-announced a Day One Patch for September 8.
Australia, New Zealand and Japan
Three territories got a different answer entirely. In early August 2026 the Australian Classification Board refused the game classification, which initially pulled both the physical and digital versions from Australia and New Zealand — IllFonic explained that the ACB rating used for physical goods took precedence over the IARC rating used for digital. The Board’s stated ground was that the game “contains illicit drug use that is linked to an incentive or reward, in that use of the drug provides a gameplay advantage to the player.”
On August 14–15 that partly reversed: New Zealand got its digital release on September 8, with no physical edition. Australia remains unavailable in both formats, no relief has been announced, and whether IllFonic will resubmit an edited build is unknown.
Japan lost one platform rather than all of them. IllFonic cancelled the Japanese PS5 version on August 30, 2026 after failing to obtain a CERO rating, citing visceral violence and nudity; the Xbox and PC versions released in Japan uncensored.
The questions that never got an answer
Three things were open before launch and stayed open — worth stating plainly rather than leaving as pending items:
- The preload window. Never published on any storefront, and now moot.
- The review embargo. Never announced. Reviews simply appeared on September 3.
- Steam and Epic unlock times. Neither PC storefront published a clock time, and no publisher unlock map ever existed. Only PlayStation and Xbox ever put 16:00 UTC in writing.
For which edition earns its price, see our editions and pre-order bonuses guide. PC players should check the system requirements breakdown — the recommended tier is not what you’d assume. Buying to play solo? Read what we actually know about bots and offline play first. And if you are in Australia or New Zealand, the classification situation affects whether you can buy it at all.
Frequently asked questions
When did Halloween: The Game come out?
The full digital release was Tuesday, September 8, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Physical editions still follow on October 6, 2026.
What time did Halloween: The Game unlock?
The PlayStation Store and Xbox store data both carried a 16:00 UTC timestamp for September 8 — that's 9:00 AM Pacific, 12:00 PM Eastern, 5:00 PM UK. Neither Steam nor Epic ever published a clock time.
What was the four-day early access?
Only the Digital Deluxe Edition ($59.99) included it. It began Friday, September 4, 2026 at 9 AM PT and ran until the September 8 wide launch. Standard-edition pre-orders did not include the head start, and neither do the physical editions.
Do physical editions get early access too?
No. Physical editions release October 6, 2026 — four weeks after digital — and include no playable head start. The '(Advance Access)' label on their cosmetics means those skins unlock early in-game, which is a completely different thing.
Was there a preload for Halloween: The Game?
No preload date, time or download size was ever published on any storefront, before launch or since. PlayStation noted that pre-orders 'feature auto-download capability on PS5 systems,' which is standard platform behavior rather than a dated preload.
